Founded in 2016 by Lynne, Mark and Ethan Daniels and Adam Clarke, SFD Group has grown remarkably, already employing an extra 15 members or staff with plans to take on another 30 over the next two years. Their growth reflects not only their commitment to quality and innovation but also their ability to adapt to the demands of an expanding client base. This progress recently necessitated a move to a new, custom-designed 31,000-square-foot facility – a space personally envisioned by Mark to support their evolving operations.
The new facility is a testament to SFD Group’s investment in state-of-the-art technology, including a new spray line, sanding machine, and edge bander. However, the crown jewel of their investments is the Comec MD TOP XL, a fully CNC-controlled line designed specifically for the machining of door frames. Supplied by JJ Smith, the Comec MD TOP XL includes a hopper feed loading and return system that minimises manual handling and boosts productivity.
The machine’s capabilities are impressive. Equipped with three vertical and one horizontal electro-spindles, a saw blade unit, and a five-exit drilling head, it handles everything from sizing and hinge recessing to spot hole and handle hole drilling. Additionally, its automated worktable and clamp positioning allow for quick setup, ensuring maximum efficiency during production.
Reflecting on the machine’s impact, Mark states –
“It has proved a real game changer for us. We are now able to machine a complete frame in just four minutes. Previously, it would have taken us 14 minutes to do the same.”
“JJ Smith took the time to listen and understand my production requirements. This level of customisation stands in stark contrast to other machinery manufacturers who try to sell you what they want, rather than what you need.”
As SFD Group continues to expand, it exemplifies how a family business with a focus on quality and customer-centric solutions can thrive in a competitive industry. The future certainly looks bright for this Stoke-on-Trent success story.
Beyond door frames, Comec’s range of CNC work centres have been designed to machine components used in the UK manufacture of plantation shutters, children’s play equipment, garden products, and kitchen face frames. For more information, contact JJ Smith on 0151 548 9000 or [email protected].
