Expansion & increased demand

Modern Housing New Homes Ltd saw a potential to expand their business but needed to move quickly to meet the pent up demand. Russell Lang, Managing Director, got in touch with specialist crosscut saw suppliers JJ Smith, who have recorded a record 3 months of sales for machines right across its range. Russell said “we knew the next stage was to get an automatic saw with links to design software and had already spoken to Martin Smith, Managing Director at JJ Smith about what was available on the market. Martin took a practical approach and clearly JJ Smith has had a lot of experience in installing machinery in our sector. He suggested a couple of software companies from whom to source the timber frame design software to link to their equipment and we choose Consultec from Eleco”. Russel continues saying “I was surprised to learn that JJ Smith had a number of saws in stock for immediate delivery and we were able to agree on the specification and pricing and have the equipment delivered in less than 10 days from the first enquiry through to a fully integrated solution that was up and running producing timber components. At the same time we had purchased some items at an auction in England and JJ Smith arranged for their engineers to take the equipment out, ship it to Liverpool and send it up with the saw. The engineer that came to do the installation even helped install this equipment even though they had not supplied it.”

Russell then went on to say “Software training and integration was done from JJ Smith's support desk and their team was working remotely, but this made no difference to us. With a direct line to the desk, it really makes no difference where the person is situated. Shajuti Islam on the technical support desk clearly knew her stuff and was in regular contact with Consultec over a number of installations. The file export routines worked first time and integrated with JJ Smith's Design2Saw interface programme that will work with several design packages and can control multiple saws.”

Martin Smith, JJ Smith's MD commented “we supplied a Stromab Matrix Upstroke saw with our in house software interface. In addition we supplied an outfeed monitor so the operator could mark up the timber components. This saw is part of the complete range of saws we offer the kit industry. As we sell and install a lot of these saws, our support team and our engineers are very familiar with the issues that timber frame manufacturers can face and can try and anticipate issues people will face before they encounter them themselves.
